The folks over at Tom's Hardware.com got bored one day and descided to "dissect" what, so far, is Internet Explorer 9.
The big deal in IE9 is hardware acceleration and the Chakra JavaScript engine. I have no idea whether Microsoft can fine tune the engine until the beta release and improve its current performance of about 450 ms in the platform preview 4, but it is reasonable to expect another 10% gain. Mozilla, by the way has its JaegerMonkey engine at about 475 ms at this time, down from about 900 ms just two months ago. Mozilla wants to hit 400 ms, so it is likely that IE9 and Firefox will be hitting that performance mark at about the same time.
Hmmm... this guy thinks so. (I'm not totally sold on it just yet).
The latest Firefox beta is a very impressive piece of work, in large part because of its new Panorama feature. It's clearly become the top browser of all. Here's why Chrome, Internet Explorer, and all the rest have a lot of catching up to do.
Panorama, just released in the latest beta of Firefox 4, is one of the best browser features to come along in a long time. In essence, it tames tabs using a Mac OS X Expose-like interface. With it, you group tabs into different sets, and you browse, you only use tabs in a specific set. So you can have a news set, a music set, and so on. That way, it's easy to find the exact tab you want, rather than having to hunt through 20 open ones. You only see the handful in your current group.
Hmmmm... it might be. Then again it might just be some artists rendition of what they would like to see.
Microsoft has delivered four developer previews of Internet Explorer (IE) 9 so far, but has yet to show off the new interface for its next-generation browser. That is expected to happen on September 15, during Microsoft’s beta launch event in San Francisco.
But maybe users won’t have to wait until then to get a glimpse of what’s coming. Microsoft Russia’s press site, on August 25, posted information and a photo that seem to be connected to the coming IE 9 beta. (The site has since pulled their post, but I grabbed the information and screen shot in the nick of time.)
