Vista is Good… XP SP3 is Better… Slightly.
May 03, 2008 - 10:05 AM - by Digital Dave
If you read all the press about Vista it’s the worst thing since “New Coke” hit the market. Seriously, what were those folks thinking when they decided to release that debacle? I remember when it was released people FLIPPED! I not talking kinda-sorta flipped, I’m talking flipped out like someone on 20 RedBulls flipped! Why would you try and change something that was about as good as it could get (yes, I know, if you are a Pepsi fan you hate Coke but this is my babble and I’m using Coke as an example here).

So here we sit, at a crossroads of sort, staring at our computers wondering what to do? Do we stick with XP and install SP3? Or, do we take the plunge and install Vista with SP1? Is Vista about as cooked as it’s going to get? Has XP been taken about as far as it can go? The answer to both is yes but in my personal opinion XP SP3 has a slight lead (and I do mean slight).

As with every operating system we all have used, v1.0 has pretty much been a pain in the ass for the most part. We all had to learn about the new features, install new drivers, upgrade this component and that component, and we loved it (admit it, you did). But, people seem to forget our beloved XP was hammered relentlessly prior to SP2 for having more holes in it than a slice of Swiss cheese. Day after day XP took beating after beating for security vulnerabilities and the press was more than happy to supply the bats for the beating party.

Microsoft then announces it’s going to fix those issues and SP2 is going to force people to make some changes to applications and for the most part all of us were told we better get ready for a more secure computing environment and basically, we needed to just deal with it. Well the world just exploded! Microsoft was going to tell US how to be secure? LOL! You have got to be kidding me! Well they did, and after the beating bats were collected, we were left with SP2 and guess what? The world didn’t explode and we WERE left with a more secure computing environment but…then… well, talk turned to SP3 and lordy, what an outcry when we were told it would take THIS long to get. We were not happy campers.

As you all know MS has been playing “chicken” with XP SP3 and now that we are on the cusp of FINALLY getting it, it was pulled INDEFINITLY, because of some bug with Microsoft Dynamics. Thankfully the Internet took care of us again and it’s readily available from a host of sites. I have tried SP3 myself on about 10 machines, from laptops to high-end desktops, and it has installed beautifully on all of them. It literally was one of the easiest SP’s I have ever installed and now we have word the folks who have TechNet accounts can get XP with XP SP3 already integrated which makes it even easier to stick with XP and people are in droves. Why? Simple… it works.

Now Vista is a different story, but what a lot of people seem to miss when it comes to Vista is the simple fact... [Read More]

The Microsoft Heyday Is Over… It’s Anyone’s Game Now.
Apr 30, 2008 - 6:28 AM - by Digital Dave
1994…

Back in 1994 I was working at a large university and was just thrilled to be there. Computers were becoming more and more mainstream, people were standing in long lines looking to get more memory which back then could cost you 100.00 a MEG (yea, I’ve been doing this that long) and Microsoft was becoming the undisputed king of software.

Windows 95 was on the horizon. I remember like it was yesterday running up to the university’s store (back when I could run and not have to take 2 Aleve afterwards) looking for the much rumored magazine which promised the first screen shots of Windows 95. I found what I was looking for and like the kid (Charlie) in Charlie and Chocolate Factory, after buying the magazine I ran back to the datacenter, went out back and slowly opened up the magazine and gazed upon the screen shots. I must have spent an hour looking and reading the magazine. When I was done, I put it back into the bag it came in, went back inside the building, put it in my desk and spent the rest of the day going through my home system in my mind wondering what I needed to upgrade to get Windows 95 successfully installed.

Summer if 1995…

The world was abuzz with what we were about to see. Microsoft had blasted the “Geek” world promising a new type of innovation on the desktop the likes of which have never been seen before.

Back in those days I use to attend a bi-monthly computer show down in San Diego and as the release date drew closer for Windows 95 the buzz around the show got stronger and stronger. Hardware and software people were all about touting how they would support one of the most anticipated software release ever conceived at the time. Microsoft was going to have the Rolling Stones play at the release party (SAY WHAT!) and everyone I knew was comparing notes to what they had found out from this person and that person making sure we all knew what we needed to run the OS.

It’s Released…

There I stand with it finally in my hands. I was one of the lucky ones who got the OS in the university store that summer and I couldn’t wait to get home and install it. I had done all that I could to my home system making sure I had enough memory, hard disk space, and graphics so I could get the FULL experience of the OS.

When I was done with work, I drove home and notified my family I was going to be busy and NOT to bug me! My wife at the time looked at me like “you are out of your f*** mind. You get to help with the boy first and then you can go and play.” So I did what I needed to do with my son, got him tucked into bed and then went and installed Windows 95. I was up ALL night playing, tweaking, and looking at every corner of the OS. I installed and then uninstalled stuff thinking if I installed it a... [Read More]

Adobe Blames Missing Shipment On Customer For Using The Online Store
May 09, 2008 - 9:22 AM - by Digital Dave
**head shake** WHAT!

Amy launched an EECB to Adobe, after her $2600 worth of software failed to ship on time. Or at all. No one at Adobe customer service can tell her why it didn't ship, or if it ever will, but one CSR suggested it was her fault for ordering through the online store rather than through a sales rep. He says no one tracks the orders on the online store, which makes absolutely no sense. What's the point in having an online store if no one fills the orders? Why the tease, Adobe? Check out her EECB inside.

Windows Vista More Vulnerable To Malware Than Windows 2000
May 09, 2008 - 6:18 AM - by Digital Dave
Say what!

Microsoft's Vista operating system is more susceptible to malware than Windows 2000, and though it's 37% more secure than Windows XP, it's still too vulnerable.

That's the contention of security vendor PC Tools Software, which has a financial interest in the vulnerability of Microsoft's software.

"Ironically, the new operating system has been hailed by Microsoft as the most secure version of Windows to date," said Simon Clausen, CEO of PC Tools, in a statement. "However, recent research conducted with statistics from over 1.4 million computers within the ThreatFire community has shown that Windows Vista is more susceptible to malware than the eight year old Windows 2000 operating system, and only 37% more secure than Windows XP."

How do I… Uninstall Microsoft Internet Explorer 7?
May 08, 2008 - 6:28 AM - by Digital Dave
Just in case you need it.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) and Mozilla Firefox 2 are the latest Web browser contenders for your attention (apologies to fans of Opera and other Web browsers, but these are the two that garner the most attention). Many of us have tried both and made a decision about which is the browser of choice.

If you have chosen Firefox 2, then you may want to uninstall IE7. But this brings up two questions: Can you uninstall IE7 and if you can how do you do it? The answers are: Yes, you can and here’s how.

Microsoft May Build a Copyright Cop Into Every Zune
May 07, 2008 - 10:35 PM - by Digital Dave
Great... cops on my MP3 player now...

If you like to download the latest episodes of “Heroes” or other NBC shows from BitTorrent, maybe you shouldn’t buy a Microsoft Zune to watch them on.

A future update of the software for Microsoft’s portable media player may well include a feature that will block unauthorized copies of copyrighted videos from being played on it.

Tuesday, Microsoft announced that it would start selling video programming for the Zune, mainly TV shows. These include programs from NBC Universal, which has pulled its shows off Apple’s iTunes Store.

Late Tuesday afternoon I reached J. B. Perrette, the president of digital distribution for NBC Universal, to ask why NBC found Microsoft’s video store more appealing than Apple’s.

He explained that NBC, like most studios, would like the broadest distribution possible for its programming. But it has two disputes with Apple.

AMD Jumps to 12-core Chip
May 07, 2008 - 4:22 PM - by Digital Dave
Damn... that's a lot of cores.

Advanced Micro Devices plans to release processors with 12 cores, which changes its product road map and kills earlier plans to release 8-core chips.

The 12-core processor, code-named Magny-Cours, will be targeted at servers and is due for release in the first half of 2010, according to the company's updated road map announced Wednesday.

The chip will include 12M bytes of L3 cache and support DDR3 RAM, according to the road map.

AMD is jumping from a 6-core chip code-named Istanbul, due for release in the second half of 2009, straight to a 12-core chip the following year, an AMD spokesman said.

What you should know before installing Windows XP SP3
May 07, 2008 - 4:19 PM - by Digital Dave
Don't think you can just throw it on. You need to make sure you have everything in order before you install it.

Anything I should know before starting the update? You could just jump into the fray, but Microsoft has a whole list of steps it recommends prior to installing XP SP3. The list talks about prerequisites and hard disk requirements, mentions (but doesn't recommend) disabling antivirus protection, and suggests several other moves, including making a full backup before you begin.

That document is also a good resource, or at least a good starting point, for troubleshooting a balky XP SP3 update; it includes information on a host of potential error messages.

Microsoft Silently Rolls Out Anti-Hack Update For Windows Vista
May 07, 2008 - 4:16 PM - by Digital Dave
LOL... classic!

The release of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 not only heralded a long-awaited update of the operating system, it also meant the end of two common Windows Vista anti-activation exploits - the Grace Timer exploit and the Paradox OEM BIOS activation crack. But those who think they can escape by not updating to Service Pack 1 would be sadly mistaken.

That's because Microsoft has surreptitiously released an anti-hack detection update via Windows Update. Those who chose to have Windows Vista install updates automatically would have this update installed and running by now. If you chose to manually select updates to be installed, you should find this update listed.

XP SP3 Gets You IE 7.0 Permanently

The warning first appeared in a post Monday to a company blog written by the Internet Explorer (IE) development team. Microsoft released Windows XP SP3 to Windows Update as an optional download Tuesday.

Ten Must-Have Gadgets for Windows Vista Sidebar
May 07, 2008 - 6:43 AM - by Digital Dave
I only have 4 running now but I still want to see why they think I need 10.

Ever since the early days of the "Longhorn" betas, the Windows Vista Sidebar has intrigued early adopters. Sidebar gadgets are basically the Microsoft answer to the Mac's Widgets—free, downloadable applets that can be useful, fun, both, or neither.

A vertical bar running up the right side of the desktop, the Sidebar can display a varying number of graphical gadget interfaces, depending on the size of the gadgets. If you cram too many gadgets into the Sidebar, it'll automatically create another page to which you can flip with a single click.

Create A Vista Recovery Disc
May 07, 2008 - 6:21 AM - by Digital Dave
Download, burn, enjoy...

Running on the Vista version of Windows PE, the Recovery Disc is basically a Vista installation disc minus the install files. It even has an “Install now” button that asks for a Product Key before failing. You're better off clicking the Repair your computer button. Among its Vista-only options are a tool for diagnosing and fixing startup problems, a version of System Restore that uses restore points on the hard drive, the restore portions of Vista's backup program, and a memory diagnostic tool.

Tab your Windows Taskbar
May 06, 2008 - 9:14 PM - by Digital Dave
A few tools to help with getting those Tabs on the old Taskbar.

Tabs have become so successful in managing our Web browsing that I've often wondered why Microsoft couldn't apply the same set of features to its Windows Taskbar. After all, the main functionality is very similar--managing unique applications (or sites) in a singular work space.

It turns out that there are several products that beef up your options for managing the Windows Taskbar like browser tabs, and two of the best are free. Today, I'm taking a look at some of my favorite taskbar enhancement software, including Taskbar Shuffle, XNeat Window Manager, and Taskbar Manager.

Ubuntu 8.04 Is Ready to Take On Windows
May 06, 2008 - 9:10 PM - by Digital Dave
Oh man... I want some of what they're smoking.

When I reviewed the previous Ubuntu Linux release, Version 7.10, I ran into trouble with my ThinkPad's X1300 adapter and had to head to the command line to get up and running. This time around, Ubuntu correctly identified my graphics adapter, and the system's new Screen Resolution tool made it easy for me to adjust my display resolution from the 1024 by 768 pixels supported on the ThinkPad's built-in LCD to the 1280 by 1024 pixel resolution of the display attached to my notebook's docking station.

My graphics experience was not, however, trouble-free. When I closed the notebook's lid, the system's default power management settings switched my LCD panel off. When I opened the lid again, rather than switching back on, my LCD screen awoke to a garbled pattern of colors. I had to switch between virtual terminals by hitting control-alt-F6 and then control-alt-F7 to straighten out my display.

How Yahoo Blew The Microsoft Deal
May 06, 2008 - 8:52 PM - by Digital Dave
God... no kidding. Man did they overplay that hand!

How's this for a quick cave? Less than 48 hours after Microsoft (MSFT) pulled the plug on its Yahoo (YHOO) offer, Yahoo has already admitted publicly that it would have been willing to do a deal below $37. It has also already said that it would be happy to reopen talks with Microsoft.

Why the backtrack?

Because Yahoo employees and shareholders are dismayed by the collapse of the deal. Because, as Chairman Roy Bostock made clear in a WSJ article, $37 wasn't a carefully calculated take-it-or-leave-it price--it was just a finger-in-the-wind gambit to pry some more cash out of Microsoft. Because Yahoo and Jerry are now getting blasted publicly by their largest shareholder, who happens to be one of the most respected institutional investors in the world. WSJ:
